See the film first and see what time the ranger is making his talks, as they are really informative. I've hiked the trail but unless you just want to travel their path to obtain water, not really worth the hike; and it's steep.

I would check around and see if you can find a "tour" company that offers tours - they would also provide the transportation. Otherwise rent a car?
