Gorge Access Permits are required to access the gorge or the base of the falls and can be purchased online only on the Cummins Falls page of the Tennessee State Parks website. While gorge access is limited to 100 people per day, access to the overlook and other hiking trails above the gorge will not require a permit. All permit users will be required to watch a safety video before accessing the gorge. Access to the gorge and base of the waterfall is only allowed during fair weather conditions and is subject to change when rain appears anywhere in the watershed. Cummins Falls is the 8th largest waterfall in Tennessee. Hiking and swimming are the favorite activities in this park.

Small park. The hike to the water falls in only a little over a mile there and back. For the more adventurous and time, take the hike down to the falls. People were swimming in the falls pool. Full review by B3812TZbarbaral

What is the trail like in late December/early January? What shoes should be worn to cross the River on the trail? How cold is the water during that time of the year?

Crocs are the lightweight enclosed shoes that a lot of people wear for gardening, etc. I wouldn't wear them to hike out to the falls. We saw so many people coming in that were wearing flip flops (even though they say not to right on the info before you go down) and weren't dressed appropriately for the hike. It is a rock and boulder hike to get to the falls. I had an issue where I got my foot stuck between some rocks down in the water and twisted my ankle. You will encounter tricky spots as well as slippery spots. I saw people with babies strapped to the front of them and it made me cringe as it would be easy to fall down there. If you simply want to go down there to "look" at the falls and not go all the way over to them, you could make it but I wouldn't try Crocs further than that in my opinion. My daughter wears Vibrams and I wear Keens.
