Just after midnight, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski was pacing in a Senate hallway, alone and looking concerned. It had suddenly become clear to all her Republican colleagues that her vote would be their best chance of passing President Donald Trump’s sweeping bill of tax and spending cuts.

The revised package now heads back to the House, where Republican leaders hope to approve it and send it to Trump before a self-imposed July 4 deadline. But it faces hurdles.

To meet the president’s Friday deadline, the speaker will have to corral his party into accepting a bill several have criticized.
