The less recognizably named cousin of the FN FAL, the L1A1 SLR (or British FAL) equipped her majesty's troops from 1954 until its replacement by the Royal Ordinance L85 bullpup.

The L1A1 served for decades, through the Suez Crisis and the Falklands War—where ironically British troops fought Argentinian troops armed with fully automatic FAL rifles.

It was supposed to be a compact and technologically advanced replacement for the venerable L1A1 battle rifle — better known as the Fabrique Nationale FAL.
