Family members say Florida state Sen. Geraldine Thompson has died following complications from knee replacement surgery. She was 76.

Florida State Senator Geraldine Thompson has passed away at age 76, her family announced in a statement. Her family said she passed away peacefully after complications from a knee replacement surgery. Thompson was the Senator of Florida Senate District 15 in West Orange County.

The Florida Senate voted Thursday to pass sweeping immigration legislation. The legislation aims to make several major changes, including: Read: Required death penalty sought in immigration plan • Make it a state-level crime to knowingly enter into Florida illegally • Deny bail and raise penalties for undocumented immigrants who commit a crime • Appropriate $250 million for local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration law • It would also slash in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants Read: New York isn’t alone when it comes to granting driver’s licenses to immigrants without legal status Democrats also attempted to pass last-minute amendments to the legislation.

Without the waivers, the undocumented students’ tuition rate would be tripled or quadrupled to out-of-state rates.

Two immigration-related bills were passed by the Florida Senate in an three-hour session on Thursday. The House of Representatives will take up the bills as lawmakers face a Friday deadline to get legislation passed designed to bolster the state's assistance with President Donald Trump's deportation program.
