Hurricane Erin on Wednesday grew in size as it made its way up into the Atlantic off the U.S. East Coast with tropical-storm conditions forecast to hit North Carolina and dangerous surf left

Erin became a Category 5 hurricane Saturday morning in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean but has now weakened to a Category 2.

The storm is bringing dangerous conditions to parts of the coast on Wednesday, but will then turn away from the United States.

Several homes are at risk of collapsing into the ocean as massive waves and storm surge from Hurricane Erin hammer beaches along the Atlantic coast of the United States.

The Atlantic basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America, as the Gulf of Mexico is now known in the U.S. per an order from President Trump. NOAA and the National Hurricane Center are now using Gulf of America on its maps and in its advisories.
