A state of emergency has been declared in Russia's western city of Engels, according to the region's governor. It comes after Ukraine said it was behind a drone strike on a Russian oil base in the region.

Thousands of protesters in the Slovak capital held banners and chanted slogans on Friday accusing Prime Minister Robert Fico of dragging the country towards Russia after he met President Vladimir Putin last month amid a gas dispute with Ukraine.

Russia said on Monday its forces had made important gains in eastern Ukraine while continuing to fend off a new Ukrainian offensive inside the Kursk region of western Russia, where a second day of fierce fighting was under way.

"The whole [Trump] team is obsessed with strength and looking strong, so they’re recalibrating the Ukraine approach," one European official told the Financial Times.

Russian forces are gaining an advantage in Ukraine by deploying new fiber-optic drones that are harder to detect and jam, forcing Ukrainian troops to adapt their tactics.

A senior Moscow-backed official says Ukraine's army struck a supermarket in the Russian-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine in an attack that used US-supplied missiles and wounded two people.
