First baseman Nathaniel Lowe signed with the Boston Red Sox, the club announced Monday, after it finalized a deal for a prorated portion of the major league minimum, and the veteran appeared as a pinch hitter during a 6-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

League sources said late Sunday night that the club was close to finalizing a contract with Nathaniel Lowe, whom they hope will provide a boost at first base, specifically against righthanded hitters.

Abreu started in right field and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo homer -- his 22nd of the campaign -- and an additional run scored before departing Sunday's contest.
