Mount Washington, known for its harsh and erratic weather, saw its wind gusts top out at 161 mph on Monday, the observatory reported. Wind speeds are relative, however: The mountain still holds the record for the highest surface wind speed ever measured in the United States: 231 mph.

It’s important to note that 161mph winds are relatively mild for Mount Washington, which still holds the record set in 1934 for highest wind speed ever recorded atop a mountain—231mph. The 161mph gust only managed to be the 19th highest daily gust the range has experienced. Winds would have to hit at least 170mph to break into the top 10 highest.
