Dudley Seers suggests that development is when a country experiences a reduction or elimination of poverty, inequality and unemployment. Edgar Owens (1987) suggested that development is when there is development of people (human development) and not development of things.

Studying at IDS has positively changed the lens through which I see the world; although many people are aware of visible inequities which are unfortunately prevalent through the world, my time at IDS has revealed that there are numerous forms of hidden and invisible inequities which must also be the focus of research and accountability.
