Maruti used to be a government-held company, and 20 years back, the Indian government handed over the reins of Maruti to its Japanese JV partner- Suzuki. This was mainly done by the government to meet the future funding needs of the company. Suzuki had started with less than a 25% stake in the then Maruti Udyog.
