Chef Boyardee, the jovial, mustachioed Italian chef was a real Chef! Ettore "Hector" Boiardi, that's how the family spells it, arrived from Italy to Ellis Island on May 9, 1914, at the age of 16. Hector quickly found employment as a dishwasher at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, three years later he was the head chef. He polished his skills and was very well known when he opened his first restaurant, "Il Giardino d'Italia," (The Garden of Italy) in Cleveland, in 1924. Boiardi's Restaurant was a
